About the Startup

🎯 At Norma, we are developing Supercapacitive Carbon Capture, a unique electrochemical process that combines CO₂ capture and energy storage. Our technology achieves up to 6× higher energy efficiency than first-generation Direct Air Capture (DAC) systems, with a projected cost below $150 per ton of CO₂.

We are growing rapidly. Over the past 15 months, we have raised a $1M pre-seed round and signed our first customer, backed by Salesforce and Klarna. We are now looking for our next team member to join us at this pivotal stage and accelerate the development and industrialization of our technology. If you are passionate about climate innovation and eager to make a tangible impact, we would love to meet you.

About the Role

We are looking for an R&D Scientist in Energy Storage to lead the optimization of our technology from an energy storage perspective and significantly improve its performance against current benchmarks.

In this role, you will drive research, development, and scale-up efforts, ensuring a clear and effective pathway toward industrial manufacturing and supply chain integration.

Location: Paris 5th arrondissement (relocation visa sponsorship available).

Language: Professional fluency in English required. French is a plus but not mandatory.

Your Responsibilities

  • Define and own the energy storage research strategy, identifying key technology bets, and translating them into actionable R&D roadmaps aligned with the company's broader CO₂ capture and commercialization objectives.

  • Design, fabricate, test, and optimize electrodes to enhance performance and scalability.

  • Design and execute electrochemical testing protocols, analyze data, and refine the energy storage performance of core components in parallel with CO₂ capture optimization.

  • Define and implement scale-up strategies, ensuring readiness for supply chain integration and industrial production.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, regulatory requirements, and quality processes for energy storage technologies.

  • Build and maintain academic and industrial partnerships to support R&D and commercialization efforts.

What We’re Looking For

Background

You are a strong fit if you:

  • Hold a PhD in Energy Storage, Materials Science (with a focus on batteries or supercapacitors), or a closely related field.

  • Have strong expertise in electrochemistry and are highly proficient with characterization techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and charge–discharge cycles.

  • Have demonstrated experience in project management, successfully delivering complex technical projects on time and within budget.

Nice to have (not mandatory):

  • Carbon materials R&D: Experience studying and optimizing the morphology and structure of carbon-based materials.

  • Industrial experience: Proven experience working on energy storage systems from TRL 4 and above, including scale-up and industrial environments.

  • Modeling & simulation: Experience with simulation and modeling tools (e.g., COMSOL, DFT, MATLAB) to inform R&D strategies, electrochemical modeling, or circuit modeling.

Mindset

  • You are motivated by real-world impact and excited to translate scientific insight into deployable climate technology.

  • You are results-oriented, prioritizing practical applicability and progress over perfection.

  • You thrive in a startup environment: you prioritize effectively, take ownership, and move quickly under constraints and ambiguity.

  • You are a collaborative team player and have strong written and verbal communication skills

  • You demonstrate strong organizational and execution capabilities.

  • You approach problems with curiosity, creativity, and analytical rigor.

What We Offer

We are an early-stage company building a world-class team and a breakthrough climate technology grounded in an ambitious vision. We are fully committed to long-term impact and excellence.

In addition to the opportunity to make a real impact in the fight against climate change, we offer:

  • Contract: Permanent contract (CDI).

  • Compensation: Competitive salary and equity package, based on profile and experience.

  • Benefits: Health insurance, Swile meal vouchers, and 50% public transportation reimbursement.

  • Impact & Growth: A unique opportunity to join at an early stage, play a critical role in scaling the company, and grow alongside the technology.

  • Culture: Low ego, team-first, and results-driven. We combine radical thinking with radical candor to redefine carbon capture.

  • International environment: English-first workplace with gender parity and a diverse team representing five nationalities.

We believe that a diverse group of minds is key to solving the climate crisis. Studies have shown that under-represented candidates are less likely to apply for an opportunity unless they feel they meet every single qualification.

We are committed to building a diverse, inclusive and mission-driven company. If you’re excited about this opportunity but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with what you read, we encourage you to apply anyways!
